PRESS STATEMENT
Wednesday 30 March, 10am

National Portfolio Funding Decision
The Board is relieved that C&T is able to carry on its work with young people across the country with the support of Arts Council England and is pleased to be selected to be in the portfolio of nationally funded organisations. We look forward to working with them, with partner organisations, schools and colleges and with young people over the next four years.
Of course we are aware that for many organisations the news has not been positive and our thoughts are with them as they absorb the implications of reductions in funding.

Notes:
1. Arts Council England has made its funding decisions for cultural organisations for the period of 2012-15. C&T has been awarded the following: 2012-13 £70,972 2013-14 £72,604 2014-15 £74,492
2. C&T is receiving £70,972 from ACE for the financial year 2011-12.
3. ACE funding represents 20% of C&T’s total income. The remaining 80% C&T either earns, or secures from project partners and independent grant-making trusts.

New Strategic Partnership

We’re please to announce that from April 2011 C&T begins a 2-year strategic partnership with Worcestershire County Council. For the first time the County Council will be a funder and direct stakeholder of C&T.
The partnership comes from the County Arts Team , led by County Arts Officer Stephen Wilson. The strategic partnership is an investment by WCC into C&T’s development of Wisdom of Crowds. Wisdom of Crowds will be a powerful new way for members of the public to collaborate and cooperate and to take ownership of making improvements to their community.
Paul Sutton, C&T’s Artistic Director: “C&T and the County Council have always been friendly, and occasionally we’ve delivered small projects for them. This however signifies a closer relationship, with the Council buying into the very things that make C&T globally distinctive - our original thinking and world-class standards.”

C&T was honoured to be invited by Child Peace Africa to work with children and young people living in some of the most deprived parts of Nairobi in Kenya. It’s the start of what we hope will be a long-term and important partnership for both C&T and our partner schools across the UK.
Over a week of factfinding and practical participation in drama, C&T’s Artistic Director Dr Paul Sutton and Assistant Director Max Allsup met key development workers and some of the children living in one of the toughest urban environments in Africa.
Korogocho is in the north east of Nairobi, and borders onto the Dandora rubbish dump, recently brought into the headlines by Bill Nighy, who has challenged British bankers to go there and see how children are having to live. It’s normal for Korogocho’s children to scavenge the dump for scraps of food, either for their own consumption or for selling on. Child Peace Africa is one of the few NGOs actually working within Korogocho, helping people of all ages handle the problems of poverty, education, health and employment. Child Peace Africa know that imaginative ways of interacting and helping children and young people will be the most effective, and drama is a powerful tool for communicating stories and experiences that will help children and young people to survive and thrive.
Paul and Max worked with over a hundred young people on pieces of wasteland within Korogocho, sharing with them well-established drama techniques and some of C&T’s more personal developments, such as LipSync.

One of the smarter streets of Korogocho:

Young people in C&T’s partner schools will be soon be at the cutting edge of motion gaming technology as a learning tool.
On November 4 2010 Microsoft released Kinect, a device allowing gamers to interact with their Xbox simply with gesture.
C&T has already created proof-of-concept work that demonstrates how a Kinect camera, attached to a regular PC, can translate live movement into a virtual environment. The potential is massive:
Gesture interaction – learners use technology but stay active and out of their seats
Avatars (computer characters under human control) become an option for young people playing in role
Disability – the keyboard and mouse are no longer a barrier for interaction.

We’re pleased to be able to share an exciting, new vision for C&T’s creative development for the next three years.
Paul Sutton, C&T’s Artistic Director and Chief Executive says: “C&T has always planned and worked strategically, but for the first time we’ve captured our big ideas and our broad vision in a way that all our friends, partners and stakeholders can really get to grips with. We’d love to hear feedback, and hope that, in clearly articulating where C&T is going, we’ll be able to attract even more partners to collaborate with C&T and benefit from our unique way of working. We’re bursting with good ideas, and we want to see them come to life everywhere.”
Ambitions 2010-13 summarises C&T’s five main goals:
1. Create amazing intellectual property
2. Grow our network of partnerships in the UK and internationally
3. The West Midlands at the centre of our practice
4. To shape the next generation of practitioners
5. Become an undisputed world-class organisation leading its field

Children and young people in both the UK and Australia will soon be involved in a collaborative project created by C&T and Central Queensland University. In the UK, schools and colleges who are part of C&T’s British network of schools will have access to TreeMappa 2.0.
Using drama, art and new media to engage with local history and stories (indigenous, post-settlement and contemporary) children will work with artists, museums, pre-service education students and local community members to create and share their work, both live and online.
The project is called TreeMappa 2.0 because it combines many of the social and cultural aspects of the ancient mappa mundis (such as to be found in Hereford) and the user-generated content online resources (such as Photosynth and Google Maps).
You can find out much more about TreeMappa 2.0 here.

(left to right) Max Allsup (C&T), Amanda Frost (CQU), Paul Sutton (C&T), Sue Davis (CQU), Lyndon Davis (Gubbi Gubbi Dancers) and Kate Greenwood (Treeline)
TreeMappa 2.0 has been sponsored by CQUniversity, The Eumundi & District Historical Association and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council RADF fund. Tree Mappa 2.0 has also been endorsed by the Noosa Biosphere Cultural Sector Board.
