Creating Participatory Cultural Experiences

C&T works with theatres, museums, galleries, festivals, heritage organisations and cultural institutions to create innovative participatory experiences that combine storytelling, performance and digital technology.

Through our Story Systems methodology, we help organisations engage audiences not simply as spectators, but as active participants, contributors and co-creators. Whether developing immersive performances, audience journeys, digital interpretation, community projects or public engagement programmes, our work creates meaningful connections between people, place and culture.

We believe culture is at its most powerful when people can participate in its creation.

Story Systems for Arts and Culture

Story Systems are participatory frameworks that combine narrative, theatre, game design and digital technology to create shared cultural experiences.

They can take many forms:

  • Immersive performances

  • Audience participation projects

  • Digital interpretation

  • Heritage experiences

  • Civic storytelling

  • Community co-creation

  • Location-based narratives

  • Interactive exhibitions

Each Story System is designed around the needs of a particular organisation, audience and place, creating experiences that are distinctive, engaging and memorable.

Reimagining Audience Engagement

Cultural organisations increasingly seek new ways to deepen audience relationships and extend participation beyond traditional attendance models.

Our work helps organisations:

  • Increase audience engagement

  • Strengthen community connections

  • Reach new and underserved audiences

  • Develop participatory programmes

  • Create digital and hybrid experiences

  • Support audience voice and contribution

  • Build long-term engagement journeys

Rather than treating participation as an add-on, we place it at the heart of the cultural experience.

C&T worked with archeologists from Nairobi National Museum to use VR to uncover the country’s hidden history of Rock Art and share it with children in the cities informal settlements.

Innovation Through Theatre and Technology

For more than two decades, C&T has explored the creative possibilities that emerge when theatre, storytelling and technology intersect.

Using our Prospero digital platform alongside live performance, mobile technologies, digital media, motion interaction, GPS experiences and interactive storytelling, we create cultural experiences that move seamlessly between physical and digital environments.

Technology is never the destination. It is a creative tool that enables richer participation, greater accessibility and new forms of storytelling.

Heritage, Place and Collective Memory

Many of our projects explore the stories that connect communities to places, histories and shared identities.

Working alongside cultural partners, artists and local communities, we create projects that uncover hidden stories, celebrate local heritage and invite people to contribute their own experiences and perspectives.

Recent work has included projects exploring migration, local history, community identity, disability culture and the relationship between people and place.

Through participation, heritage becomes something people help shape rather than simply observe.

Using Prospero, C&T created an interactive tour of the history and landscape of the National Trust’s Croome Court, Worcestershire. Students from Central School of Speech and Drama developed the Place Story in collaboration with C&T.

Inclusion and Cultural Democracy

Accessibility and inclusion are fundamental to our artistic practice.

We have extensive experience working alongside learning-disabled artists, neurodiverse participants, young people and communities that have traditionally faced barriers to cultural participation.

Our approach seeks to create cultural experiences where every participant can contribute meaningfully, ensuring that diverse voices help shape the stories being told.

Participation is not simply a method. It is a commitment to cultural democracy.

Research and Creative Innovation

Our work is informed by ongoing research, experimentation and collaboration with universities, cultural organisations and international partners.

As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation, C&T contributes to national and international conversations around participation, digital culture, creative learning and applied theatre.

This commitment to research allows us to develop new models of engagement while ensuring that innovation remains grounded in artistic practice and participant experience.
