Introducing Story Systems: creating narratives for our times

Commentators often distinguish theatre from film, television and online media through the idea of ephemerality. A performance happens in a particular place and moment: you have to be there, and that transience is part of its magic.

But digital technology is ephemeral too. Devices, platforms and formats rapidly become obsolete. Today’s new technology is tomorrow’s forgotten hardware. VHS, Betamax and the early social web can now feel almost as distant as performances that disappeared when the curtain fell.

The next five years will bring even more radical change. Generative AI, spatial computing, next gen augmented and virtual reality, synthetic media, intelligent characters and increasingly adaptive digital environments will alter how stories are created, encountered and shared. Cultural practice cannot simply observe these developments from the sidelines. Artists and storytellers must explore and integrate their creative potential while continuing to protect human imagination, agency and connection.

C&T needs to shape a practice for this future.

C&T’s mission is to place people and communities at the centre of these technologies—not merely as audiences or users, but as active participants who can question, shape and create the stories that emerge from them.

Story Systems are designed to reflect and anticipate this transformational potential. Stories that can move between theatres, classrooms, public spaces, phones and online communities. Audiences becoming participants, creators and distributors. Cultural practice needs formats capable of connecting live experience with digital participation—without sacrificing the human encounters that give storytelling its power.

‘Story Systems’ are our response: participatory experiences that fuse theatre, storytelling and digital technology. They are narrative structures that people can enter, influence and remake—not simply stories delivered to a passive audience.

Story Systems can take many forms:

Learning Stories inviting participants to learn by being part of the story, whatever the subject, issue or currcukum area, transforming knowledge into dramatic situations in which learners investigate, decide and create.

Place Stories uncover the histories, memories and possible futures held within buildings, landscapes and communities through narratives, digital mapping and place based explorations.

Motion Stories using gestures and movement to create interactive adventures in music, dance, drama and digital media.

Civic Games ake the theatre space and the digital space one forum for consultation and engagement.

Collective Mythologies invite communities to co-create shared narratives, blending theatre, memory, folklore and digital storytelling to explore identity, place, culture and collective imagination.

Each Story System might become a performance, workshop, installation, digital experience or combination of all four. What connects them is a shared belief: stories become more powerful when people can take part.

Story Systems will form the creative heart of C&T’s future work. They are our core creative practice and our developing body of intellectual property—reusable frameworks that can travel between places, partners and audiences while remaining open to local adaptation.

Prospero, our award-winning digital platform, will be the engine for this innovation. It provides the digital infrastructure through which Story Systems can be imagined, built, delivered, repeated and evaluated. More importantly, over the next three years we’re implementing an ambitious programme of R&D, future proofing Prospero witinnovations. This will expand C&T’s creative capacity by enabling us to integrate new and emerging technologies into participatory practice in inventive and purposeful ways. As technology changes, Prospero can evolve with it—allowing our artists, partners and communities to explore new possibilities without continually beginning again. It future-proofs our practice while keeping storytelling, drama and human participation at its centre.

This is an invitation to artists, educators, researchers, cultural organisations and communities: help us create the story systems our times demand.
